If you presume that it would be fun to have Miriam’s gift, reading “Blackbirds” may change your mind as the author Chuck Wendig does a marvellous job of showing some of the downsides to having such a powerful gift. Especially as Miriam’s visions and premonitions are never wrong.
Miriam is a relatable character:
Another reason why “Blackbirds” is such as powerful story is that Miriam is such a relatable, likeable character. Unlike some novels who try to paint characters as being heroes or villains, “Blackbirds” central character seems more human and is capable of acting kindly and at times out of her own self interest. As an example, in one part of the book Miriam decides to try and use her power in order to amass a large amount of money. Which is a move that many individuals would make if they had Miriam’s ability.
It features multiple viewpoints:
“Blackbirds” is definitely a page turner. One reason why you’ll find yourself staying up late in order to get to the end of “Blackbirds” is that it is not written from one point of view. While you will get to read Miriam’s perspectives, you’ll also get to read numerous other perspectives. As an example, when a kind truck driver Louis Darling saves Miriam from being targeted by a couple of frat boys who decide to harass her, you’ll get to read some parts of “Blackbirds” from her white knight’s perspective.
Which is interesting as, when Miriam touches him for the first time she foresees that he will soon experience a violent, brutal death. A vision which Miriam wished that she didn’t see. As you’ll get to read some of the points of view of the individuals who Miriam touches and you’ll get to find out about their deaths before they happen, it’s definitely bittersweet when you read the portions of the book which are written from their perspective.
It boasts an interesting twist:
When Miriam touches Louis, she foresees that when he dies a painful death he will be calling her name. To find out why, you’ll have to read “Blackbirds” for yourself.
It also features carefully constructed flashbacks:
If you usually hate the use of flashbacks in books, there’s no need to worry as the author Wendig, expertly uses flashbacks in an ingenious way. That will keep you hooked.
So if you want to find out what happens to Miriam and Louis and love the sound of “Blackbirds”, it’s definitely well worth purchasing a copy of “Blackbirds”, to find out about their intertwined fates.
