Hobbies as a Tool for Helping Foster Kids Thrive and Grow

admin · January 27, 2023 · Leave a Comment

It’s no secret that being in foster care can be tough on kids. Children in the foster care system may have been removed from their homes and families due to traumatic situations, leaving them struggling with feelings of abandonment, insecurity, and low self-esteem. Being a foster parent is all about counteracting the past by providing positive experiences in the present, and one thing that can really help with turning things around for foster kids is hobbies.

Why Hobbies are Important for Foster Kids

Having hobbies gives kids something to look forward to, get excited about, and feel a sense of purpose through. For foster kids, hobbies can be a way to express themselves, a safe and positive distraction from difficult emotions that they may not feel ready to deal with just yet, and a way to boost resilience, confidence, and self-esteem. What’s more, taking part in hobbies can be a way for foster kids to connect with other kids who they have things in common with. Socialisation and community is a huge part of helping a foster child thrive, and it’s something that you will usually be required to learn more about if you decide to apply to become a foster parent through orangegrovefostercare.co.uk.

Finding the Right Hobbies for a Foster Child

Every child is different and when it comes to hobbies, there’s a vast range of options with something out there to suit every kid, even those with niche interests. Find hobbies that are a good fit for your foster child. Some kids are more active than others, so sports could be a great choice for them. Others might be quieter and more introverted, preferring to take part in hobbies like arts and crafts or reading. Some kids do better with group hobbies like playing music in a band, while others enjoy hobbies they can do alone, like playing video games. Figuring out the right hobbies for your foster child is a process of working together with them, figuring out their likes and dislikes, and trying new things out.

How Spending Time on Hobbies Can Benefit Foster Kids

Being able to dedicate time to their hobbies and interests and develop new hobbies can be a very positive experience for foster kids. Many hobbies allow kids to express themselves and provide a healthy outlet for tough emotions. Hobbies also give kids a sense of pride and achievement, which can help with boosting self-esteem and confidence in themselves. And let’s not forget that hobbies can have a huge, positive impact on many aspects of a child’s development, including developing social skills, teamwork skills, problem-solving abilities, fine motor skills, and more.

Best Hobbies for Foster Kids

Some foster kids might have established hobbies, while others may need to try out a few new things before figuring out what they like. Here are some examples of hobbies that your foster child might like to try:

  • Sports, like playing football, playing cricket, swimming, or horse riding
  • Creative activities, such as painting, drawing, arts and crafts, pottery, or crochet
  • Musical hobbies, like playing an instrument, singing, or dancing
  • Food-related hobbies, like baking, cake decorating, or cooking
  • Science and tech-based hobbies, like playing video games, coding, robotics, and science experiments
  • Reading and writing

These are just a few examples, but there are endless possibilities.

Hobbies aren’t just fun pastimes for children in foster care. The benefits can run much deeper, providing a sense of security, confidence, self-esteem, and belonging.
