As you may have noticed, it’s been a little quiet here the past week and a half. That’s because I’m currently enjoying my summer holiday. While we’re not going away and I had planned to post throughout my vacation, the first weekend of my vacation my laptop decided that it was time for a meltdown and I needed to format and re-install the thing. This led to four days of frustration and yelling at the laptop before it finally decided to work properly again, but by this time I was so thoroughly done with computers and typing and everything that I just gave up and buried myself in books. So I have been reading in the past week and I’ve read some amazing titles, such as Snorri Kristjansson’s Swords of Good Men, Stephanie Saulter’s Gemsigns, and Jasper Fforde’s classic The Eyre Affair, reviews for which will start appearing next week. But I decided to give myself the fortnight off from blogging, because after all the crap the laptop put me through, I was done sitting behind the computer and I decided I was just going to relax, read, and spend time on my family. And it is glorious!
So that’s what I’m doing right now, but I wanted to quickly post today to let you know that I’m part of another mind meld. The lovely Paul Weimer invited me to share my thoughts on my favourite female protagonists and why I loved them, which turned out harder to answer than I thought! Below you can find part of my answer:
To decide on my favourite strong female protagonists in genre fiction was no easy task. Many of the characters that sprung to mind weren’t actually the protagonist of the book they appeared in or on closer consideration they weren’t as awesome as I thought I’d remembered. Or they just weren’t my favourite. In the end I settled on the following three, with some honourable mentions to end on.
If you want to see my selections and those of among others Kristine Katherine Rusch, Emma Bull, Julia Rios, Bibliotropic’s Ria, and Fran Terminiello, please visit the Mind Meld over on SF Signal.
